Do I really need two computers and two cellphones for CES?

January 1, 2005 by Mike Wendland

I’m packing my computer bag for the 2005 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It starts Thursday but all the preliminary stuff for the media gets underway Tuesday.

But as I get organized, I’m realizing I’ll be taking two computers this year. And yes, they both fit in my Timbuk2 Commute messenger bag. I’m taking my Mac PowerBook 15-inch G4 and my new Motion Computing m1400 VA Tablet PC. I think I’ll leave the Mac in the hotel room and do my morning writing with it and take the lighter Tablet to the Convention Center and Press Room for e-mail and note-taking.

But this is ridiculous. No one needs two computers.

Except they’re both very cool and I just know that if I brought one, I’d miss the other.

I’m also taking two cellphones: The Sprint Treo 650, which I hope to use for live MobLoging - if I can figure out how to get MobLog images to show up as an include on the main page of this blog; and the XV6600 that works on Verizon and has EV-DO broadband connectivity in Vegas.

I’m also taking the Pentax Optio SV digital camera, the Verizon PC5220 Wireless card that acts as a broadband modem for both the PowerBook and Tablet PC, a couple of USB thumb drives and assorted chargers. I’ll pack a powerstrip for the hotel room in a suitcase.

    Mike,

I think you need to read the book: Turn it Off.

I did not see the web cam listed. How can we join in the fun without it? Bring back some new goodies for us to be made aware of so we are on the edge at all times.

    Mike,

Your not alone. I often travel now with my 12″ PowerBook for personal use and to update my personal website, and photo editing if necessary. In addition, I also take a Dell Laptop so I can ensure that if work calls - I can do anything on the Windows network @ work via VPN (I just can’t do everything with the Mac yet).

I have a thumb or flash drive on my key ring, plus a spare in my case. Laser pointer for presentation.

Two digital cameras… my new SLR Canon Digital Rebel with two lenses and I bring an Olympus fixed lens digital camera for quick shots or an emergeny backup.

When traveling for recreation, and it seems more for busines too.. also a Sony MiniDV Camcorder.

And ah yes… once cell phone. Cell phone service is horrible in Northern Michigan, so not plagued by more mobile tech yet.

Makes going through TSA one miserable experience, as you well know.
