As soon as the last ice hockey bills for my kids are paid this month I think I’ll be “doin’ the shuffle”! This iPod looks way too cool and at $149 for 1GB - looks like “his and hers” models around this house.

I just bought 256MB iRiver units for my 2 sons for Christmas - $130 ea. Sure they have an FM tuner, but honestly, who cares? My kids haven’t even thought about listening to the radio on the iRivers yet. I’m thinkin’ they’re going to be pretty jealous of the ‘old mans’ iPod Shuffle when it makes it’s appearance!

This player is definitely interesting. I have a 256mb MPIO FY200 and have been pretty happy with it. My MPIO is almost the same size as the shuffle, though a bit thicker. It takes 1 AAA battery, vs the shuffle’s rechargable battery and includes FM and a voice recorder… not to mention that it cost $80 on clearance.

I can see why Apple chose not to include a screen on these. Most candybar-shaped flash players have screens that are so small they border on useless. Certainly most folks over 40 would probably have trouble with such small screens anyways.

The price is competitive and the iTunes Music Store integration is really nice. I bought my MPIO for the gym and when I go running, though I am tempted to ebay it and get a shuffle instead. 512mb for $99 is quite competitive and the 1gig model even more so. The only player that gives it a challenge in terms of price and features is the Creative Muvo Micro.
