OnBoard with OnStar

October 9, 2006 by admin

I’m not a car guy. I look at automobiles as transportation. Get me here, get me there, give me good mileage, some comfort and that’s about all I ask.

So when I leased a new Buick Lucerne, it wasn’t out of brand loyalty.

I got a good deal and the car was reasonably well-appointed, quiet, didn’t look hideous and gets me 22 m.p.h. — a lot better than the 13 I got on the Ford F-150 I turned in.

But one month into the experience, I can tell you right now that my next car will be from General Motors.

I’ll buy from GM because of OnStar.

The latest generation of OnStar — GM’s onboard safety and communications system — is far and away the most convenient, useful option I’ve ever had on a vehicle.

I’ve tried OnStar several times and walked away unimpressed.

No longer. One new feature has so won my loyalty that I can’t imagine giving it up. It’s the new turn-by-turn navigation service that GM just launched as standard in most Buicks and Cadillacs and will offer as a $100 option on other models later this year.

OnStar, including the new navigation system, is free for my first year. Afterward, with the turn-by-turn feature, it will cost $299 a year. I’ll take it.

I’ve used it probably a dozen times. Push the blue OnStar button, a live representative comes through my entertainment system speaker, greets me by name and asks how he or she can help.

I tell them I want directions, give them an address and, in seconds, they upload a route to the car radio, which then displays roads, directional arrows, mileage to the next turn and uses a computer voice to give me turn-by-turn instructions.

My first trip was on a hurried Saturday morning. I was scheduled as a speaker at a conference center in northern Oakland County and had left my house late. OnStar got me to the facility — located off a remote road.

Since then it has flawlessly directed me to offices, the homes of friends, restaurants and meeting places the whereabouts of which I had no clue.

Only once, when it had me get off westbound I-94 on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn did it goof. It told me to go straight from the exit. But the Michigan exit from I-94 has recently been reengineered. I actually had to turn right to go westbound. OnStar was clearly referencing an out-of-date map.

But it was so minor a miss that I’m not going to hold it against that nice computer voice.

And here’s another neat OnStar feature: vehicle diagnostics.

It will e-mail a free checkup report on fluid levels, tire pressure, brake condition and maintenance needs. You can also push the blue button to request a diagnostics check.

All those safety features of OnStar that we’ve heard those incessant radio advertisements extol — emergency services notification, operator checks when the air bag deploys, opening the car door if you lock the keys inside — are also great security reasons to justify that second-year renewal fee.

My one complaint with OnStar has to do with the telephone built into its control panel.

I like it. It’s truly hands-free. I’d use it all the time if GM weren’t so greedy.

You can program the OnStar phone to dial by saying a phone number and afterward, if you want to have it stored, just name it “home” and then, next time, just say “call home.” It does.

I love it.

But I can’t afford it.

Existing Verizon Wireless customers can add the OnStar phone onto another account they have and work against the minutes for the package they already pay. But those with other carriers are out of luck.

OnStar charges premium prices to get phone minutes for the car. They give you 30 free minutes to try it and offer 100 minutes for a onetime fee of $14.95 that’s good for one year. But if you plan to use the onboard phone a lot, you have to prepay a package from $13.99 for 30 minutes (about 46 cents a minute) to $299.99 for 1,000 minutes (about 30 cents a minute).

That’s highway robbery.

But the other features and especially the turn-by-turn navigation system, using global positioning satellites and seamlessly integrated with the vehicle entertainment system, make for highway peace of mind.

I’m seriously onboard with OnStar.

    Michael -
Fine job yesterday moderating the debate.
I wonder if you might be available for a short radio interview with me, Thursday morning, on the Michigan Talk Network’s morning show? We’re on 11 stations across Michigan, headquatered on WJIM AM 1240 in Lansing.
I have openings at 7:20, 8:20 or 8:35 am if you’re available for five minutes.
Please let me know, if so, where I can ring you at one of those times?

    Thanks a million!

Dang! Those are some slow vehicles! *grin*
    just pointing out the typo…

Thanks for the update on OnStar for those of us who didn’t know about the upgrades to the service.

I had Onstar on my Buick. Definitely not worth it. On my 1 hour commute, I would try to connect to place a cell call. (Northern NJ). Couldn’t even connect-too busy. I locked myself out of the car. They could not unlock it. They don’t advertise the truth- you need to be in line of sight with one or more of their satellites. Our house is not. They tried several times(there is a window for 3-4 minutes every hour that they can try-they don’t tell you that, either). I was late for work, and finally told them to forget it & let Buick send over a locksmith. That was much quicker, and surer. I have my own cell phone I can use any time, and my own GPS which I can move from car to car. Onstar? A ripoff.

Sheriff: 13-year-old OK after bus stop abduction
PARRISH, Florida (CNN) — A 13-year-old boy who witnesses said was abducted at gunpoint Friday from a school bus stop in Parrish, Florida, is now with deputies, Manatee County Sheriff Charlie Wells said.
Clay Moore was found on a ranch or farm about 20 to 30 miles from the bus stop after he borrowed someone’s cell phone to call his mother, the sheriff said.
Clay is doing well and will be reunited with his parents later Friday, he said. Police have no suspect in custody.
Clay has minor scratches, but Wells said he couldn’t be sure where those came from.
The suspect — who police say was described as either Hispanic or a white male “with a dark tan” — approached the bus stop Friday morning, according to Wells.
Other children at the bus stop told police Clay resisted getting into the suspect’s red, early-model, extended-cab pickup truck, Wells said. “Sir, I don’t know you,” the children recalled Moore telling the man
“There’s no doubt about it,” Wells said after the Amber Alert was issued. “He was taken against his will. He was taken at gunpoint. He was forced into that vehicle.” (Watch Wells explain how Clay was kidnapped )
Police searched rural areas around Parrish, about 25 miles south of Tampa. Even jail personnel were tapped to participate in the search, Wells said.
The suspect is described as 5-feet-6 with a medium build. Witnesses told police he was wearing blue jeans, a blue-and-tan-striped long-sleeve shirt and sunglasses.
Authorities said they don’t believe Clay was specifically targeted. He was a target of opportunity, snatched because he was “the one in the street,” Wells said.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and FBI are assisting in the investigation.

Yahoo’s new version of web mail is, without a doubt, one of the coolest and most fluid Ajax applications we’ve seen to date. For the average user it offers every major feature that you can find in Outlook or Thunderbird, and it does it with style. But that isn’t all, the Yahoo team also took the time to layer the app with embedded tricks, hacks, and shortcuts that makes the whole experience that much sweeter.

With that in mind, here are the top 11 tricks that I use everyday with the new Yahoo Mail Beta:

    1. Trick: Instant Address Book Add - Drag a message onto the Contacts link and you’ll see the icon change to a plus sign which means you can add that contact to your address book in one easy step.

    2. Trick: Navigate your inbox the quick way - Ctrl + Shift + Up Arrow or Down Arrow let you jump to messages in the same folder that have the same subject line. You can hit Ctrl + Shift + Alt + Up Arrow lets you choose another factor to filter on (such as flag) when using Ctrl + Shift to navigate.

    3. Easter Egg: When composing a message just hit the Subject: button to cycle through a collection of random (often humorous) subject lines. A lot of real gems in here including:

The brain has been polished professor.
All your platypus are belong to us.
I believe those were mouse droppings.
The twins just turned 2 and 4 this month!
How about never? Is never good for you?
    Care for a foam apple?

    4. Hack: Organize Your inbox via Message Finder - Now it is as easy as typing in a search, ordering the results by Contact, Location, or Subject, selecting the messages, and dragging them to a new folder. Sounds complicated? It isn’t, just do a search and then start dragging and dropping messages.

    5. Tip: Select Multiple Messages - Hold shift after selecting a message to select multiple messages. Hold Ctrl to add specific messages to the list. Hit Crtl-A to select all messages in a folder or search results. This is a great way to select everything in your inbox and move it to an archive folder.

    6. Tip: Read Messages Now - Go to Options link in the upper right hand corner and then select Mail Options. Find the item labeled mark messages as read and select immediately. This way when you scroll through messages you no longer have to pause one each one to have it marked as read.

    7. Tip: Hide/Show Viewing Pane - Just hit the letter V on your keyboard to have more space to organize your folder. Hit V again to reopen the message preview.

    8. Tip: Quick Compose - Type the letter N to start a new message or R to reply to a selected message.

    9. Trick: Find Text within your message - Hit Crtl + F after selecting a message to find text within a that message. Hitting the enter key lets your scroll through each instance of the word within the message.

    10. Trick: Scroll through folder without reading - Holding Crtl lets you scroll through a folder messages using the arrow keys without selecting each individual message.

    11. Tip: Send Message Now - By using the Crtl + Enter Key you can send a message you are composing instantly. No more hunting for the send button.

That’s it! There are quite a few more shortcuts document in the help section but these are the one’s I’ve found most valuable. Leave a comment and share your Yahoo Mail tips.

Very interesting and informative site. While not every subject is represented, I love the depth of information and representative works available here for the subjects you do cover. Great site!
