Reason #5151513248 for buying a Mac

Once again I point out: Macs don’t get viruses… or spyware! Worm strikes down Windows systems

    Keep on trolling Mike.

I agree that it’s a shame that Macs are not popular enough to write virii for.

    Maybe next decade.

I am very happy about that fact sawtoothbarbie! As a matter of fact, would you please not tell anyone else that Macs are so unpopular that they have no - that’s zero, zilch, zippo, nada, nill, null, - virus’ written that affect them. That way, it’ll be our little secret and I can get some real work done while the rest of the world is screwing around looking for the latest anti-virus d’load to keep their computer(s) safe from the legions of virus writers who only target “popular” operating systems.

I raise a glass and toast the unpopularity of the Mac and the MacOS and say here’s to another 20 or so years of virus free computing for me!

    Cheers!

    Sawtoothbarbie–

It always astonishes me when people use the “no viruses for Mac only because so few people use them” line as if this is some sort of put-down.

Forget about the fact that it’s not as simple as that (there are dozens of technical reasons (no default root login, ports closed by default, etc) for why every Unix-based OS is more inherently secure than Windows). That’s not the main point; the main point is that even if the “not enough people use ‘em to make it worth the trouble” rationale is true, SO WHAT? That’s an argument in FAVOR of becoming a Mac user! It’s like being part of a small group of people who know about a beautiful cove on the beach, or a fantastic hole-in-the-wall restaurant that no one else knows about; you enjoy your life while the rest of the suckers have a lesser experience.

How on earth this can be considered a “slam” is a mystery to me.

Hey, sawtoothbarbie- I think your “Maybe next decade” remark is prophetic. I’m betting that in 2006, you’ll start seeing the Mac make serious advances in market share, mainly because Windows users will be able to run their existing software on the Macintel machines then, but also because lots of PCers are just getting sick to death of the virus/trojan/worm/etc. situation they have to endure.

Then, as the Mac market share grows, we’ll be able to test your theory. Stay tuned!
