Skype 2.0 offers video and more

I’ve been so impressed with the new 2.0 version of Skype that I went ahead and signed up for a phone number and outgoing VoIP calls. I’ve done one video conference so far and it was pretty slick, though running it through a wireless home network was the reason I was getting some dropouts, methinks. Anyway, I’ll do more experimenting with a ethernet connection and see if it is reliable as early reports say. Link: Skype Makes New Video, Blogging Friends.

Greetings from the “deep south” of Canada (Windsor). I have had Skype on my laptop for about a year now. I bought 25 euro of Skypeout thinking I would use it to call a friend in the UK frequently. Unfortunately he was not in when I called and has no answering machine (!), so I only made one connection, and that cost 0.02 euro. After six months Skype cancelled my Skypeout account for non-use, so my two minutes of successful calling to the UK cost me 25 euro. I wrote them, but they did not relent; they offered me a 10 euro coupon, which I have not bothered to use. So if you and your readers think SKYPE IS HONEST??? and that is an ethical way to do business, I’d say go ahead, but caveat emptor. I think they are unethical.

Do banks treat your money that way?
Dan, Skype tells you that if there is no activity for 180 days, you lose the remaining account balance. I saw this the first time I purchased minutes.

I have written extensively here about the problems with SunRocket… dumped it last summer. Just never measured up. Terrible service.
Mike, you’ve had a lot of video iChats– how does Skype’s video chats compare?
I’ve done two so far with this new version. It’s comarable to Apple’s iChat in quality. It runs better over an ethernet broadmand connection that through a wi-fi home network.
