Windows Mobile 5.0 looks like a winner

To hear the hype last week from Microsoft and Palm, you’d think that that coming new Treo-Verizon smartphone would be the launch of the new Windows Mobile 5 operating system. In truth, although it will be a first for Palm, it’s really the second coming of Windows Mobile 5, which is available now on ab ultracool Sprint phone. I still hate Windows Mobile. It’s biggest flaw is the horrible fonts and spacing.
Open a spreadsheet on a Palm (even one with an older 160×160 screen), then open the same spreadsheet using Pocket Excel. You’ll see almost twice as much information on the Palm thanks to it’s smarter use of fonts. If you use a Palm with a 320×320 (or higher res) screen, there IS no comparison; the Palm wins hands down.
Another thing to keep in mind is that there are WAY more free apps for Palm. Microsoft charges for their development tools and developers often want to recoup those costs. Palms dev tools are free. If you do the math, Palm OS still makes way more sense.
The only reason to use Windows Mobile, in my opinion, is if you’re hopelessly addicted to All Things Microsoft.
