Online GM ad slogan contest cracked

Monday, January 24th, 2005

An advertising slogan General Motors is revealing on highway billboards across the country and coordinating through a Find The Message Website has been cracked much faster than the company expected.
The slogan apparently touts the GM on-board safety and communication system OnStar and used billboards that displayed only a single word or punctuation mark to spell out the slogan.

IE is still king of the heap

Saturday, January 22nd, 2005

Yeah, I know. Firefox and Safari are great browsers getting lots of buzz. But don’t let anyone kid you. IE, as insecure as it may be, is hardly hurting in users. Read past the headline in: CoolTechZone :: Firefox gains more market shares than Internet Explorer

Mac mini: I’ve got mine

Friday, January 21st, 2005

Check the photos in my MOBlog in the right hand column. Click on any to see larger.
But… so far… the process just couldn’t be easier.
I’ve plugged an old Dell 17-inch flat screen in and an old Apple keyboard I had lying around and a three-button Microsoft mouse.
I flipped the power on, downloaded some programs from the Net and am good to go.
I’ll chronicle the details over on MacMove but this thing seems to really be a breeze.

Comment spam is now futile

Friday, January 21st, 2005

The major blogging and search organizations have gotten behind an initiative called nofollow - a simple line of code automatically inserted in comment posts by the blogging tool that tells search engines to ignore Web addresses submitted by spammers solely for the purpose of increasing page rankings.
That means that there is no no incentive for comment spam. They are not going to gain hits or higher rankings. Them spam in futile. At any rate, on this blog, no comment spam gets through anymore thanks to a whole slew of precautions.
Want to learn more about this? Check out Ben Trott’s post: Support for nofollow.

Microsoft launchces Office Outlook Live

Thursday, January 20th, 2005

Microsoft today announced Office Outlook Live, a subscription offering that integrates Outlook with MSN Hotmail into an easy-to-use email management solution. This is the first Microsoft Office product to be made available as a downloadable subscription service and provides customers the ability to manage multiple e-mail accounts, calendars, address books and to-do lists in one place from virtually anywhere, even offline.
Sort of like .Mac has been doing for a couple of years.
With an Outlook Live subscription customers will receive the latest version of Outlook ? currently Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 for Subscription Services ? plus 2 GB of online storage, the ability to send 20MB attachments, and advanced spam and virus protection, all for $59.95 per year.

Quick comment posting with Typekey

Wednesday, January 19th, 2005

As I’ve been fighting to keep the comment spammers off, regular commenters have surely noticed that after sending a comment, it takes a while for me to notice and approve it.
That can be bypassed with TypeKey, a new authentication system. When you hit comments, you can register for a TypeKey account. Once you do that, your comments immediately show up on this site.
Lots of sites will be implementing similar procedures. And your Typekey registration will work on them all.
Sorry for the hassle, but just since the weekend, there have been more than 600 comment spam posts thwarted by the new procedures.
