Do we really need yet another blogging service?

February 8, 2005 by Mike Wendland

Sure sign that a trend has peaked: When every Internet company under the sun starts its own blogging service or buys up someone else’s. Jeeve dives into blogs.

    Mike,

The difference is that Bloglines isn’t a blogging tool, it’s an online aggregator. It’s for reading, not primarily publishing, blogs.

Great — condescension by the ignorant.

Bloglines is a RSS aggregator, similar to FeedDemon or My.Feedster. So yes, it WORKS WITH blogs, because it scans their feeds and reports on them.

The advantage of Bloglines is that it is web based. That means even Mac zealots can use it in the same fashion on their machines at home as well the other machines they encounter.

Lots of other features and bells & whistles, but you have to get over the patronizing attitude in order to investigate them.

I saw this article on my Bloglines subscription list. Easy to use, at home and at work.

Im dissapointed by this news, I’ve been using Bloglines for over a year no and it “was” a great free web based service. I’m not looking forward to a bunch of ads. Better save my links and move on…

    Hi Mike,

You might want to read that article more carefully… Bloglines is an RSS aggregator, not a “blogging service” per se. Not only that, but it’s pretty much considered the leading aggregator by far (in fact, I found this post via Bloglines). Some estimates put it between 30% and 50% of the overall aggregator market, so your comments don’t necessarily fit what you’re suggesting (that this is an “also ran” play). This is, actually, quite a big deal…

It’s not about Jeeves getting into offering a blogging service, but about them creating the tools to find and read blogs… something the other search companies are still figuring out.
