Comcast’s decision to put a 250-gigabyte cap on monthly bandwidth use for its residential customers may look like a generous number, but some critics suggested the cap may cause problems for users in the future.

Twitter has become a must check for those looking for the latest on just about any major story.
But when it’s a story like Hurricane Gustav and New Orleans, monitoring the latest tweets from Twitter users in the path of the storm is almost like being there.
In addition, Twitter has set up two groups for those in the affected areas: One can be used to instantly post requests for help or emergency aid, such as a report that someone is on a roof or has a medical crisis. The other is Read more

A Text message from God.. but for a fee

TextFromGod.com offers to deliver inspirational messages and Bible verses to your cell phone. To sign up from your mobile phone send a text mesage: TEXTFROMGOD to: 41411 or go to TextFromGod.com. Alas…the Bible may be tree but the profiteering folks who run this opportunistic Website charge.
The site says a $10 donation is “required.” Somehow, I don’t think God would be pleased.

Internet caps may cause users to limit usage

August 24, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

Like all monopolies that control vital services, the nation’s Internet providers are moving to control the growth of traffic on their networks by making the heavuest users pay the most.
And it’s a scandal. Even modest Internet users may hit these arbitrarily-set usage caps, as SFGate.com reports. All the cable companies are considering it.
You think big oil is greedy? The cable companies are every bit their profiteering equals.
The coming usage caps will likely cause consumers to limit their Net usage, downloads, video watching and other services and features that many of us have come to take for granted. Read more

Shame on Apple: iPhone 3G is sub par

August 22, 2008 by admin · 4 Comments

This hurts me to say it but…shame on Apple. The Apple 3G is a mess. Dropped calls, frozen screens, crashed apps. In and out 3G coverage. Agonizingly slow EDGE coverage. It’s not just me, look at the forums and you’ll find them filled with complaints.

The 3G unit I got is .. at best… unreliable. And when it does work, the battery runs out mid-afternoon. Yes, I use push e-mail. And no, Apple, I don’t want to turn it off. That’s why I bought the phone. But push gobbles power so hungrily that the phone can’t even make its way through a single workday. That is simply unacceptable.

Shame on you for releasing this when it is so buggy. Shame on you for pretending that all is well and stone walling the critics. Shame on you for sending down fixes and patches and not giving us specifics on what they’re supposed to fix. And, by the way, the patches have fixed nothing that I can tell. In fact, I think they made things worse. Read more

How credible is the news? Check its NewsCred

August 22, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

From the most recent NBC-TV PC Mike segment…
The Internet has made everyone a critic. From eBay ratings to music reviews to social networking sites and now, to the news media. A new site keeps track of and chronicles breaking news from all over the world. That’s handy, sure… but what makes it unusual is that users vote on how credible the information is.

The idea behind Newscred is amassing all the world’s credible news, in one place… typed by trustworthiness and how credible is the story. And that is determined by readers, not the media, who follow the story and then rate it for reliability, bias and fairness in presenting differing views.

There’s a bunch of mainstream media outlets sampled, from TV networks to big newspapers and wire services… as well as dozens of the most popular blogs. Stories are categorized by subject matter… like reporter beats. Read more
