Quick, I need 100,000 followers
Hmmm. Can you believe 2 million Americans earn part or all of their income blogging? That’s what Mark Penn says in the Wall Street Journal in this fascinating piece about America’s Newest Profession – blogging.
Put in perspective, Penn claims “there are almost as many people making their living as bloggers as there are lawyers. Already more Americans are making their primary income from posting their opinions than Americans working as computer programmers or firefighters.”
Other interesting claims in the piece:
“It takes about 100,000 unique visitors a month to generate an income of $75,000 a year.”
“Bloggers can get $75 to $200 for a good post, and some even serve as “spokesbloggers” — paid by advertisers to blog about products”
“As a job with zero commuting, blogging could be one of the most environmentally friendly jobs around.”
Hmmm. As you can imagine, there’s lots of talk – and considerable skepticism in the blogosphere.
So much so that Penn, CEO of the global communications firm Burson-Marsteller and president of the market consulting firm Penn, Schoen and Berland, posted a response.
But the figures seem pretty accurate, at least generally so based on the skimpy data and few studies that have been done on blogging as a profession.
OK folks, I need 100,000 of you to start following me.
Right now, please.
