Apple iPhone 4 Bumpers should be free

I’m smelling a devious scheme in this controversy over poor reception issues caused by the way users hold the iPhone 4. It has to do with the $29 “Bumpers” being sold by Apple for the new phone.

This is the first time Apple has offered such a product.

I think they are offering it because they knew this phone had problems and that the simplest way to fix them was to enclose the sides in a bumper that keep the user’s hand from interfering with the antenna. Wrapped in an non-conducting case, the signal degradation issue is much less a problem.

And the more I think of this, the more I think the FCC needs to get involved. The design problem affects the core performance of the iPhone. I think Apple rushed this phone out fully knowing there would be problems.

The fact that they want to charge us $29 for a bumper case to make the phone work properly is the height of arrogance. At the very least, they need to be free.
