Shame on Apple: iPhone 3G is sub par

August 22, 2008 by admin

This hurts me to say it but…shame on Apple. The Apple 3G is a mess. Dropped calls, frozen screens, crashed apps. In and out 3G coverage. Agonizingly slow EDGE coverage. It’s not just me, look at the forums and you’ll find them filled with complaints.

The 3G unit I got is .. at best… unreliable. And when it does work, the battery runs out mid-afternoon. Yes, I use push e-mail. And no, Apple, I don’t want to turn it off. That’s why I bought the phone. But push gobbles power so hungrily that the phone can’t even make its way through a single workday. That is simply unacceptable.

Shame on you for releasing this when it is so buggy. Shame on you for pretending that all is well and stone walling the critics. Shame on you for sending down fixes and patches and not giving us specifics on what they’re supposed to fix. And, by the way, the patches have fixed nothing that I can tell. In fact, I think they made things worse.

Coming on the heels of the MobileMe debacle, the iPhone 3g problems are making Apple seem very Microsoftian these days.

I have been a huge proponent of Apple over the years. I have loved the first generation iPhone. But I know no other way of saying it: This one is sub par.

I’m anxiously awaiting the one more promised software/hardware update that the Apple forums say is coming. But if you are considering an iPhone, my recommendation is hold off.

It just has too many problems.

I’m in Australia and have all the problems you have … except I also have the problem that my phone randomly calls people! I’m with Virgin and they’re saying just reset the phone and see what happens. My response: ‘I’m resetting it everyday’. I’m looking forward to the September update.

Wow - I can’t believe the problems you are having.

My iPhone 3G has worked perfectly. Zero dropped calls. Generally great reception - there are spots where it reverts to Edge. Push e-mail - no issues. Battery charged every other day for the most part - sometimes once a day after heavy video use.

One app did crash the phone - I just did a hard reset, deleted the app and didn’t whine.

All this whinging - why didn’t you return the phone under the cooling-off period?

If I was a dissatisfied as you seem to be I would have returned the product.
