Protect e-mail login with password manager

September 19, 2008 by admin

From Mike’s NBC-TV report - There’s no doubt about it: It’s a hassle managing all the different passwords needed for e-mail and various Web sites and services these days.

Maybe that’s why so many people are so careless and keep making the same mistakes that allow identity thieves to so easily swipe personal data. Just ask GOP VP nominee Sarah Palin, whose Yahoo! e-mail account was hacked and then displayed all over the Net.

I have a valuable tip on how you can not only keep all your passwords safe but… actually remember them!

Security experts estimate that more than 21 million passwords are stolen every year, from Web mail accounts and social networking sites to critical services like bank accounts and credit cards — a statistic that is on the rise throughout the world.

That’s why having a password manager is so important. My favorite these days is called PassPack, a free service that will let you protect, store and manage up to 100 passwords.

Once you set up an account, it helps generate strong passwords that are almost impossible for identity thieves to hack. And then, through a web-based interface, it helps keep track of them and allows 1-click login and immediate sign-in access to all accounts without copying and pasting user names and passwords.

All you need is a computer and you – and only you – can retrieve and keep safe all those password you need to do just about anything online these days.

I recommend RoboForm for the PC. It encrypts my passwords, address and credit card information. I have used it for years. It allows you save the data to your mobile Windows phone too. It’s fairly inexpensive, around $30. The free version can be downloaded and lets you save up to 10 passwords.
