HP’s PC shipments jump 26% in latest quarter

HP on Wednesday night reported results that held off rivals and put it ahead of the industry curve. The company’s net income jumped 25 percent year-to-year in its latest quarter to top $2.3 billion and did so chiefly on the back on its home PC sales. Shipments of computers grew by 26 percent, most of which came from stronger notebook sales (up 26 percent in revenue) while desktops grew at a more modest amount (16 percent revenue)…. NPD: school notebook sales "recession-proof"

Back-to-school notebook sales were as strong as ever this year but skewed in favor of cheaper systems, the NPD Group said today in a new study. About $1.6 billion of the $7.6 billion spent between late July and mid-September went directly to notebooks, or about as much as was spent last year despite ongoing economic problems and rendering them “recession-proof.” However, the revenue came at the expense of system prices: while more systems were sold, the average price of a school notebook fell from $804 last year to $624 this year…. Notebook sales surpass PCs

Quarterly sales of notebook computers have topped those of desktop computers for the first time ever in the United States, market intelligence firm IDC reports. IDC said notebook sales made up 55.2 percent of computer sales in the July to September quarter, 18 percent growth over the same period last year and the first time they have surpassed 50 percent. The share of notebooks shipped in the U.S. in 3Q08 stood at a solid 55.2%, according to preliminary figures from IDC’s U.S. Quarterly PC Tracker.
