Ms. Dewey is hot - new Microsoft search engine not so

April 12, 2007 by admin

The Internet has become another form of mass media.

And with its incredible popularity has come the ability to make instant celebrities and pop culture stars. So it is with a hot new personality showing up on, of all things, a new search engine launched by… believe it or not… Microsoft.

My NBC-TV segment this week looks at the Ms. Dewey Website.

The Ms Dewey site is being promoted through viral marketing… word of mouth, forwarded emails and the blogosphere rather than outright advertising. Ms. Dewey, in reality actress Janina Gavankar, has over 600 video interactions that took three days to shoot. She pouts, teases, jokes around and gets impatient when you take too long entering your search request. She sometimes offers her own often entertaining responses to your searches.

She may be hot… but the search engine isn’t. It’s hard to read, scrolls too fast, offers a limited view.

But, hey. The Net has a new celeb.

I agree the search engine isnt that great. I’ve seen other search engines like this but by far this one is the best. Im not sure if i would use it again i think its just a one time thing.

are you referring to the results presented by ms dewey? it’s not supposed to be a functional search engine. if you want that, go to live.com and try the search. it’s pretty good in my view. this sort of feels like jumping on the ‘i don’t like msft’ bandwagon and not really a considered review of the search product.

That was funny…I asked her where West Edmonton Mall was and she started talking about Art. How dorkish. I live right by WEM…i just wanted to test her. How ever i like how sophisticated that website is.

In regards to Neal’s comment. I don’t feel that the comments were negative about Microsoft, just stating that Ms. Dewey is better for entertainment then for actual searches and I agree with that. And Neal is right in that live.com is the MS engine to use for higher functionality.

The 1st time I saw Ms. Dewey, I had to laught. This kind of searching is pretty funny. It’s mainly more for just entertainment, then actual searching, but it’s still cool. It would be cool if Microsoft adopted this look on their own search engine, but would kind of lose the chattiness Ms. Dewey has. And the results come up much more faster. I still prefer using Live search (not on Ms. Dewey though) to Google or Yahoo!, just mainly because I think it looks better, and gives great results too. You can even plug equations like “2 + 2″ and it actually gives an answer. Whatever it is, Ms. Dewey is still cool.
