Hi PC Mike… I have windows 98 for an operating system and am having difficulty finding adware and spyware that is compatible with my system. Can you help?? I can’t afford to purchase any software so have searched endlessly for free software that works with windows 98 (first edition) with no luck. Also, I don’t have Adobe reader either and can’t find a download for the free software that is compatible with windows 98. I would love any advice you can give me.

Why didn’t you mention Microsoft’s own tool Windows Defender? It does real-time checking and is also free. Doesn’t take up too many resources either. Can be downloaded direct from MS http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

You state that Spybot download is “free”. However, it appears that you can then only scan for junk on your pc. If you want to delete the junk, you have to register and pay $20-40. Why do you say it’s “free”?

Try the site cnet it lists both free and pay software for your computer. They also have articles about compatibality of diffrent programs.

I used to use spybot, when I used it it was free. This could change so Im sure that Mike just assumed that it hadnt changed.

I have Ad-aware SE Plus installed but since my dauther started going to My Space and other sites, her computer died, or since I downloaded Yahoo Messenger, OutsideInfo keeps trying to blast me with ads. I mean every few seconds and it makes it impossible to type or search as this ad page pops up before my ad-watch stops it or my Internet Explorer restricts it. What in the heck can I do to stop this crazy mess? HELP!!!!

I would like to know how to put on Spybot and Adaware that you say is “free” to my computer.
I keep getting a message that says my present one is expiring soon, but does cost like about $40.00 and I understand you say it is “free”.

It may be too late to post a response to some of these, but I will give my two cents worth anyway.
First off, Spybot Search and Destroy is totally FREE. It is available for download at cnet download.com. It does not prevent you form getting spyware or adware installed on your computer, but it does a superb job of getting rid of it. You have to install it, update it, and scan your computer manually. Then you have to select the things from the list you want to remove and click on another button to actually remove the stuff.
Secondly, AdAware SE is another totally FREE program that works very well to remove even some bits that are left behind by Spybot S&D. Again, it does not prevent you from getting infected with the stuff, but is a great tool to remove the junk…
Both programs will run on Windows 98 first edition if you install the VB6 runtime files available at Microsoft download website.
The biggest problem with most anything that you get from the internet is this: NOTHING IS REALLY FREE. If people would stop long enough to read the fine print in the AGREEMENT that you must agree to in order to download and install anything off the internet you would find things that are scary to say the least if not downright wrong.

One thing is true….no 1 program will find and get rid of all spyware so use several programs.
Spybot & Ad-Aware are good but won’t get everything.

As most people already know, spyware is always something we want to keep off of our computers.
As with my other blogs, this one is also designed so anyone can keep their computer clean of spyware.
All you have to do is a google search for What is spyware and you get lots of results and most of the results basically say they same thing about spyware….it’s bad and we don’t want it on our computers.
Opinions will always vary but most agree….no single program will get everything. Run several different programs to have the best chance of finding everything.
I’ve tried many free anti-spyware programs and these seem to do the best so far….click the link to go to their download page.

4. AVG Anti-Spyware Free edition
NOTE: Before running any of these programs, check for updates to insure you don’t miss anything new that might not get detected otherwise.
