Vista incompatabilities

After more than five years, Microsoft is releasing Monday a complete rewrite of its Windows Operating System, replacing Windows XP with a new version called Vista. Despite the multimillion marketing campaign, you may NOT want to be among the first to buy the new software package.

Lost in all the hype and hoopla are warnings about a whole bunch of software compatibility issues. Some of the every day programs you rely on may not work on your PC unless you get an update or, in some cases, purchase entirely new software.

Among the popular applications that have had issues: Quickbooks, Lotus Notes and several anti-virus problems. Those who use Virtual Private Networks to access work computers remotely may have problems, too. To find out whether your system – software and hardware – will work with Vista, head over to a special section on the Microsoft Vista Page. It offers free downloads of programs that will scan your current system and let you know what works… and what doesn’t.

Vista is the most sweeping and secure Windows update yet. And while it may very much be your best PC solution, my suggestion is to inventory your favorite software and make sure it is Vista compatible before you buy.

I am going to a “lunch and learn” next week on Microsoft Vista and will post a vodcast on their presentation the link of which I can forward to you if you would like. Just let me know. In the mean time I wanted to show you a video I made at the Microsoft Alumni Network’s “After the holidays party”. I think Microsoft makes an interesting anthropological subject:

    Mike,
We at Dominion Programming and Web Design, have been using the new Windows Vista operating system in various hardware and system configurations for ourselves as well as a few of our “adventurous” clients and have found that once again no matter how you configure nor how much RAM you have or how fast your hardware is, Vista in one way or another will be sure to let you down in both your computing experience and overall expectations of the operating system. We (as many other Programming companies) just simply wish Microsoft had applied more focus on the “stability” and a little less on the “pretty” of their new GUI, now don’t get us wrong, we all want a “pretty” desktop with a bunch of nice new features, but what good is it at all if it refuses to keep running? And who wants to dump a lot more cash into an already up-to-date computer just to run another so-called cutting edge operating system from Microsoft, remember how “stable”, “reliable” and more “secure” XP was supposed to be?. With this all being said we have not even began to start on the software compatibility issues that would be a whole other story.
