Comcast doesn’t deliver on speed “gift”
August 29, 2005 by Mike Wendland
I got a very nice card from Comcast in the mail today, thanking me for my business and saying:
We can’t thank you enough. So we’ll stop for now - and give you more speed instead.
The card goes on to say:
“we’ve increased your Internet speed to 6 Megs (that’s a 50% increase!), without increasing the price.”
Note that it doesn’t say we “will” or we are “planning.” It flat out says they have.
Except they haven’t.
Just to be sure, I power cycled my modem. Then I did a speed check. I’m getting just over 3 Megs (that’s 50% LESS than what they claim to have given me!)

You’ll need a DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modem to get the new speeds (>= 6mbps). I had the same problem when I tried to get 6mbps, I had an old Toshiba PCX1100U (DOCSIS 1.1) and it refused to accept Comcast’s 6mbps config file, so it defaulted to the 4mbps one. Comcast will let you buy one for $99 or rent you one for $3/month.
Best Model = Motorola Surfboard SB5120 (DOCSIS 2.0)
Good luck!
I have a Motorola Surfboard SB5100 which claims support for DOCSIS 2.0. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything above 400K upload / 4MB download.
6MB speed? I can’t even get a connect that is stable. For the last month I’ve call Comcast 5 times becuase my Internet connection was down. They keep sending out unskilled technicians (I have 25 yrs of experience in networks) and can’t seem to find the problem. I guess I need to go to DSL or WOW.
I have a 5120 modem and still get the 3074 speed. Comcast seems to have skipped Royal Oak again.
Comcast blows completely. Tech support is incompetent if non-existent. Every support person has a different story about why my connection is bad. Worst of all is the constant apologizing and never admitting that it’s their fault. Not unlike the Bush administration.
It’s Wednesday 7 September and Comcast is still in the 3000 meg range. When does truth in advertising apply to Comcast? We live in the Royal Oak district.
It’s JUNE 17th and Comcast IS STILL in the 3 MEG range, not even 4 MEG like they are suposed to be in my area (Flat Rock, MI) I’m switching to Talk America DSL, I’ll let you guys know how that benchmarks.
Big difference between advertising 6 Megabytes = 6 MB and advertising 6 Megabits = 6 Mb.
Slightly mis-leading advertising claims in my opinion.
See 6 MB = 48 megabits (factor of
Probably want to configure parameters with window scaling on, a full 1500 with 65,000 MTU or higher, selective acks on, and time to live at 128.
