New video iPod could send the entertainment world spinning

There is something really addictive about holding an iPod video player in your hand, no matter how cheesy the program. And the limited shows availabe through the iTunes Muisic Store so far are pretty cheesy, indeed. Still, I believe this ultra-chic device will be viewed as one of those seminal technology moments that take digital entertainment to a new level.
Here’s my review of the new video iPod. Funniest thing in it is that Apple doesn’t want us to call it the video iPod. They want it referred to as just… the iPod. Sorry, that’’s not going to happen, Mr. Jobs. How else will people differentiate between models that do and don’t do video?

I’m a pretty minimalist kind of guy. I don’t “need” every new technological gadget that comes about. But after testing this new ipod at the Apple Store, it just seems to me something I have to have. The 30GB model feels absolutely perfect in the palm of your hand. I just wish that the combo lock were more secure. Its disabled after plugging it into a new computer. After having my previous ipod stolen, I really would be more happy with a higher security lock on any new device I buy. If such a lock were available, I’d be sad it got stolen, but happy to know nobody else could use it. I know. I’m a very selfish individual.

Call it the VPOD if it’s got video, or maybe just “Vee”, and call it an Ipod if it has no video…….

My only major gripe about the unit is that they did away with the beveled edges on the front. The 3G and 4G iPods were much more comfortable to hold without those sharp edges.

Additionally, I wish they wouldn’t have trimmed so much fat from the case and instead put in a much bigger battery. Sure, it would’ve added to the weight a bit, but it’d be worth it for video playback.

And yes, the units are in short supply. I have been in attack mode this past week, calling twice daily the local Apple Store, two CompUSA’s, two Best Buy’s, and MicroCenter awaiting delivery of the new iPod.

When they were in stock, all most stores had was the 30gig units in White. The Apple store had some White 60’s and Black 30’s, but no black 60’s. Then I struck gold yesterday around lunchtime. I went to Best Buy, asked the sales associate about the iPods, and he said they were sold out.

Disappointed, I headed towards the exit when I saw another associate pushing a cart filled with about 30-40 units. Of course, all were White 30gig’s… with one lone Black 60 gig unit… just what I was holding out for.

So far, I’m pretty pleased, though the new slim iPod still looks massive next to my nano. ;)

The black units are going to be hot and really tough to come by this holiday season.
