Satellite radio listeners complain about reception
July 22, 2005 by Mike Wendland
About half of them say they do not receive good reception when driving. So says a new survey. Broadcasters don’t fear satellite radio competition — yet

Weird… because I have two friends with XM and recently got it for myself a month ago.
No problems at all in the car except in parking structures. I’ve had more problems at home, but I just need to angle the antenna the right way and all is good.
After reading the article, i see a HUGE flaw in the study. They only interviewed 300 people!
This will only change as more cars include satellite radio. The XM Roady2 just dropped to $50.. so there never been a better time to try it out.
I couldn’t disagree more. It would be interesting to see the methodology of the survey.
I live in a rural area - but have used my XM radio - in the county and in the city (Milwaukee, Lansing, Detroit, Chicago, St. Paul…), with minimal outages - tunnels, etc.
No rain or snow fade like DirecTV or Dish Network. Works like a charm.
Looks like an industry trying to play down a competitor, at least a future competitor.
What kind of XM radios were used? Handhelds? If so, I might agree with people having reception problems. I travel throughout four states for my job and I listen to XM radio ALL the time (factory-installed radio in my 2005 Honda Accord). Outside of being right next to a skyscraper or in a parking garage, I never have reception problems.
In fact, I like XM so much, it makes me realize how awful (music and personalitites) commercial radio really is.
I love having my Sirius, but I have to say that it cuts out on hills and treed streets.
I’ve been using an XM skyfi 2 for approximately 6 weeks. The only problem I’ve experienced in the car is by virtue of the fact that I use the FM transmitter to listen through my car stereo rather than hard-wiring the unit to my sound system. That’s a function of the connection method that I chose, though…not an indication of XM’s service.
I’ve used the system all over the state, from metro Detroit to Lansing to GR and Muskegon, all the way north to Petoskey. I’m very, very pleased with XM, to say the least.
Been using XM for 2 years in Upper Michigan. Heavy tree foliage or tall buildings blocks signal for a minute. Love XM radio.
