The newspaper vs Web dilemma

June 17, 2005 by Mike Wendland

Nearly one-fifth of Web users who read newspapers now prefer online to offline editions, according to a new study from Internet audience measurement company Nielsen//NetRatings.
This is shaking the newspaper industry to its core.
Do the math, follow the trends and make the projections and, as it is now headed, the current means of producing newspapers on dead trees doesn’t have much of a future.
Online does, but despite some innovations, the vast majority of newspapers make no real money online.
The Times are indeed a-changin.

I used to read the freep and news regularly on-line when I lived in Minneapolis because the paper version was not available. Now that I live in Detroit, I usually prefer the paper version because it can be read anywhere–and the paper can be used for other purposes when done.

The on-line version is useful when wanting to learn more about the subject of an article…either through google or a web link.

By the way, someone needs to fix the way the colors register on photographs in the paper. It seems that everyday one color or another is offset, making for some weird effects–like Rochelle Riley’s inadvertent “moustache” one day. Someone needs to get that problem fixed or quit using color!
