Turn off your PC Week

Most of us have heard about TV-Turnoff Week, an annual event that is held the last week of April (it starts Monday this year).
But now there?s PC-Turnoff Week, with the first one scheduled for August 1-7, a time when parents and their children are encouraged to turn off the family computer and enjoy other activities, such as reading, exercise, and family time.
?Just like too much TV, parents should be concerned over excessive computer use by our children, and must act to curb it,? says Joe Acunzo, the founder of what he hopes will also be an annual event.
Among other things, he claims too much computer time has many of the same negative consequences that too much TV viewing has - making for overweight kids, causing them to have lower grades and to be socially isolated.

Back in the mid-90’s, when I was running an ISP in the downriver Detroit-area, I would send out poingnant messages to our dial-up customers “suggesting” that over the major holidays that they “consider” not dialing in an connecting to the server, but to actually spend time with their loved ones, the people around them, and the community in general.

You should have seen the flamers I got back!

Moderation and discipline are the keys to success in any activity in life. Won’t this be great, Mom and Dad spend one week a year with the kids and then let them back into the out-of-control routine of computer games and internet. Why not have the family time scheduled every day along with scheduled computer time? Over-reaction and protesting by those who have a good balance will not change those who are the problem. Someday we all will accept responsibility for our own actions and work for balance in all our lives. Until then, I guess let’s wait for August. :-)
